Description

Erich von Stroheim Photo Lot (Various, 1920s-R-1960s). Fine/Very Fine. Studio Release Photos (3) (8" X 10.25") & Portrait Photos (2) (7.75" X 10" & 8" X 10").
After immigrating to America, Erich von Stroheim soon found himself working in Hollywood as a stuntman and bit player. After working with D.W. Griffith, his career soon took off as he played villainous Germans during World War I. However, he had bigger dreams. He took up writing and directing, and became known for his extensive attention to detail, long original cuts, and his extravagant budgets, much to the displeasure of his producers. Due to his unwillingness to compromise his artistic principles for studio finances, he returned to work as an actor, appearing in such films as The Lost Squadron, The Grand Illusion, and Sunset Boulevard. Offered here are two portrait photos of the famous actor-director, along with photos from his films The Merry Widow, which he directed, As You Desire Me with Greta Garbo, and French director Jean Renoir's anti-war classic The Grand Illusion. The photos show various signs of wear, including small chips and tears, pinholes, slight creases, and minor toning. The photo for The Merry Widow has strips of paper tape on the verso bracing chips.
