    Description

Carter the Great (1927). Fine+ on Linen. Eight Sheet (79.5" X 104.5"). Miscellaneous.
Charles Joseph Carter (1874-1936) was a journalist and lawyer whose fascination with magic led him to a new career. Due to considerable competition in the U.S., Carter made the wise choice to pursue life as a stage magician abroad, where he became quite famous as "Carter the Great." His most popular acts included the "sawing a woman in half" illusion, making a live elephant disappear, and his dead-awakening "Spirit Cabinet." The stone litho eight sheet seen here depicts Carter's "shooting a marked bullet!" act, in which a live audience member is 'shot' with a bullet that was tied to a ribbon. The bullet and ribbon would pass through the person, leaving them unharmed. A partially restored stone litho poster with bright color and a clean overall appearance. It has general signs of use, such as slight edge and fold wear, minor creases, small tears and chips, fold separations, some subtle edge and fold toning, faint smudges, surface wrinkling, very subtle color fading, and unobtrusive stains. Although backed on linen, no further restoration has been attempted. The linen has been trimmed to the poster's borders, but not into the poster itself.
