    Description

Barnum and Bailey: Imre Kiralfy's Nero (Strobridge Litho Co., Late 1890s). Eight Sheet (83.5" X 149.5").
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the traveling circus was America's most popular public entertainment. With no radios or televisions, and motion pictures still in their early stages, the lively grandeur and pageantry of the circus captivated spellbound audiences. Originally known for spectacular acts featuring exotic animals, acrobats, high-wire stunts, clowns, and fire breathers, Barnum and Bailey Circus expanded its offering to include theatrical reenactments of historical events, including Roman chariot races and Columbus' meeting with Spain's Queen Isabella before his epic voyage of discovery. On this phenomenal eight sheet poster, the much maligned Roman Emperor Nero looks rather bored as slaughter and debauchery unfold around him. Printed over a century ago, this poster's superbly drawn stone lithography imagery is still incredibly rich in color. An outstanding collectible from the world's "Greatest Show on Earth!" Professionally restored on linen, the poster presents remarkably well after touchup to tears and toning in the left border, edge wear, and chips at the crossfolds. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.

    Estimate: $1,200 - $2,400.
