Metropolis (UFA- Cinema Art Ltd, 1928). Australian Pre-War Daybill (15" X 40") Flood Style, Bernie Bragg Artwork.
An exceedingly rare sight both at auction or in collections, original paper for Fritz Lang's seminal expressionist work is among the most sought after by serious fans around the globe. And so, Heritage is thrilled to present this vibrant stone litho daybill, the only known remaining copy of its kind. Setting the bar for an entire genre, Lang's early entry into the dystopian sci-fi anthology honed in on not just on futuristic visual elements, but also hot button social issues of the day. Dealing with both the concepts of socialism and fascism, his picture found popularity with both the international community and, much to his dismay, the burgeoning Nazi regime. In a paradoxical twist, the Third Reich's propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels, offered the partially-Jewish Lang the head director position at UFA studios specifically for the film's presentation of social justice. Lang declined, and fled Germany that very night. In keeping with that theme of the downtrodden common man, former WWI draftsman and artist Bernie Bragg depicts what is perhaps the film's most iconic scene. In a bevy of swirling colors, he illustrates the pious Maria (played by Brigitte Helm) and the forgotten Worker children as they cling for dear life at the bottom of the flooding city. Certainly one of the most beautiful advertisements produced for the film, this never before seen daybill looks stunning after professional restoration has addressed missing paper at the top in the imprint area and along the bottom border, including the copyright information. It has also replaced part of the left and right borders, as well as a tear and some paper loss in the left border extending slightly into the background. Despite these issues, the vast majority of the artwork is unaffected, and only has very light touchup to the folds. Fine+ on Linen.

    Estimate: $20,000 - $40,000.
