Description

Men of the Desert (Essanay, 1917). Three Sheet (42" X 82").
Now presumably lost, this silent Western drama was produced by the Essanay Film Manufacturing Company, an operation jointly founded by Gilbert M. "Broncho Billy" Anderson and George Kirke Spoor, the co-inventor of the first practical 35 mm movie projector and the man who recorded the world's first newsreel in 1897. This beautifully preserved stone litho three sheet is all that survives of the film, depicting Jack Gardner as a cowboy who has just wandered into a town ripped apart by feuding cattlemen and sheepherders. He agrees to assist the sheriff and winds up wounded, but is nursed back to health by Ruth King, a cattleman's daughter, seen at the center of the poster trying to broker peace in a duel between warring factions. The poster shows remarkably little wear for its age and has all three of its original panels, with slight corner bends, small crossfold separations and a minor edge fold tear in the lower border, a vertical edge fold tear in an upper border, minor tears in the right border, and a dust shadow in the right border of the lower panel. There is staining and smudging in the borders and small stain in the title. Folded, Very Fine.
