    Marilyn Monroe (Pin-ups, Boston, Mass., 1953). Pin-up Poster (21" X 60.25").
1953 was quite a year for Norma Jeane Baker, better known to throngs of adoring fans as Marilyn Monroe. It was not only the year of Niagara, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and How to Marry a Millionaire, but also the year Popular Science magazine ran an ad in its August edition for a set of fantastic, life-size pin-ups including the rising new star. The ad was sandwiched between offers for "Bargain Carbine-style .22 Rifles," "Build Your Own Jet Engine," and "Famous Super Sniffer for Uranium Prospecting," and called the pin-up posters "The Best Gag Gift Ever." For only two dollars, a man with a "den, bar, or playroom" could own one of these images of the bikini clad bombshell featured in a set. The two varying styles were for two different printings of the posters and sold by different vendors. This examples features Monroe in a red, candy-striped number. Professional restoration has addressed a mild gouge in Monroe's leg, two small chips in the left border, and chipping with tears in the top border. There was one tear each in the lower left and right borders into their respective feet, a tear from the right border into her ankle, one from the left border into her leg, and a long tear from the bottom border into the background with chips. There is some faint staining visible in the upper border. It should be noted that there is no paper loss within Monroe herself. Fine+ on Linen.
