Description

    Making a Living (Keystone/Wesfilm House, 1915). Stock British One Sheet (30" X 40").
A monumental find, this poster is the only one known to exist. It was inspired by Making a Living, the film debut of Charlie Chaplin, who plays a swindler. Released in 1914 by Mack Sennett's Keystone Studios, this is the 6th of 12 movies featuring the Keystone Kops. This is one of only a couple of films in which Chaplin and the Keystone Kops both appear. Although Chaplin wore a large moustache, a top hat, and carried a walking cane, his famed screen persona of "The Little Tramp" did not appear until his next film, Kid Auto Races at Venice. In later accounts, Chaplin lamented that the best of his performance had been left out of the final cut. The very rare British one sheet presented in this lot is the first paper Heritage has offered from this film, and it features an excellent stone litho portrait of the comedic film legend. We believe it is a stock poster as it features Chaplin in his classic "Little Tramp" makeup. Touchup was applied to a tear in the bottom border that extends to Chaplin's lapel, a tear in the bottom border that extends to the "O" in "London," and chips in the bottom border. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
