DescriptionM (Nero-Film AG, 1931). German Three Sheet (37.25" X 83").
Considered to be his best work by the director himself, Fritz Lang enthralled audiences everywhere with this grisly precursor to the film noir genre. It was Lang's first ever talkie, and likewise Peter Lorre's first speaking film and starring role, considered to be the best performance in the actor's career. Lang had written the part almost exclusively for Lorre, and drew his morbid inspiration from the crimes of several German serial killers. So intensive was his research into the mind of a degenerate murderer, Lang went as far as to stay a week in an asylum for the criminally insane. During this time, he interviewed a number of child killers sentenced to the institution, including the infamous "Vampire of Düsseldorf," Peter Kürten. All these incredible elements came together to form one of the most bone chilling and evocative stories ever shown on the silver screen, a testament to the early horror genre. Showcasing the bloody hand synonymous with the film, this rare stone litho, country of origin three sheet is one of only three copies known to exist. It has had professional restoration applied to small chips in the folds, pinholes in the interior, and mild tears with gouges in the left background. There are some minor bits of post-restoration paper loss in the upper left corner, and the interior sows some surface scuffing in the hand. The linen has been trimmed up to the border, but not into the body of this incredible poster. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
Estimate: $12,000 - $24,000.
