Description

London After Midnight (MGM, 1927). Three Sheet (41" X 81").
Considered to be one the "holy grails" of lost cinema, the last known copy of this classic silent horror film starring the great Lon Chaney was destroyed in a fire in an MGM studio vault in 1965. Just over ten years ago it was reconstructed using more than 200 still photographs and a continuity script (coinciding with the film's 75th anniversary) and released to DVD. Starring Lon Chaney, the "Man of a Thousand Faces," and directed by Tod Browning, who is most known for directing Dracula (1931) and Freaks (1932), the film is based on a script by Browning and depicts Chaney as a vampire (though in makeup only). Posters for this famous horror film have been as elusive as the film itself over the last eighty years, but Heritage has had the distinction of bringing to auction not only an Argentinean one sheet in 2009, but also the only U.S. one sheet to surface, which sold for $478,000 in the November 2014 Signature event. It is with immense pride and excitement we now present the only known copy of the stone litho three sheet format depicting a vampire in makeup. The top panel, featuring the impressive image is mounted on linen and in excellent condition (VF+), requiring only light touchup to the folds, a small chip in the upraised hand, and small tears in the left and right border. The overall grade (F-) is warranted due to a missing bottom panel, which includes only the credits, has been beautifully recreated using the reference of the pressbook image. This lower panel is the size of a one sheet on edge and is produced on paper as a separate piece. The pieces will frame beautifully together. A collector's opportunity of a lifetime! Fine- on Linen.
