Le Commandant Marchand a Travers l'Afrique (c. 1900). Fine+ on Linen. French Advertising Poster (51" X 75") Jean Paul Louis Tinayre Artwork.
An exciting and patriotic image, Jean Paul Louis Tinayre created this cover ilustration for the first edition of Michel Morphy's weekly publication, Le Commandant Marchand a Travers l'Afrique. Morphy's work was a partially fictionalized account of French colonial expansion in Africa, retelling the adventures and battles of the nationally famous Commandant Jean-Baptiste Marchand, who was in charge of the "Congo-Nile Mission." Although backed on linen no further restoration has been applied. The poster shows edge and fold wear, slight fold separations, mild creases, and small tears. There is some staining in the right border that extends slightly into the printing. The poster shows both toning and some color fading. The linen has been trimmed nearly to the border on the left and right sides. Fine+ on Linen.

    Estimate: $1,000 - $2,000.
