    Description

Laurel and Hardy by Al Hirschfeld (MGM, 1936). Original Mixed Media Artwork on Illustration Board (16" X 19").
In 1936, MGM commissioned artist Al Hirschfeld to produce one of his famous caricatures--this one of Laurel and Hardy--to be used in their yearly exhibitor book. The duo's film releases that year were The Bohemian Girl and Our Relations. The image turned out to be the two comedians sharing a bed, with a picture of Greta Garbo overlooking them. The portrait was done in ink and gouache, with raised paper cut-outs and cloth. The entire picture was then glued down on board. Over the years, the glue holding down the pieces of the blanket has stained the cloth. There are glue stains on the board surrounding the image, but the artwork is very sharp and clear. The exhibitor book from the 1936-1937 season with the image on page 57 is included. It is rare to find original Hirschfeld drawings and this being a multi-media piece is very rare. There is another image in this book done by Hirschfeld for the Marx Brothers and that artwork in now in the National Portrait Gallery. Fine/Very Fine.4
