Laura (20th Century Fox, 1944). Six Sheet (81" X 81"). Director Rouben Mamoulien and cinematographer Lucien Ballard began the project, but producer Otto Preminger took over as director, discarded Mamoulien's footage, and brought on Joseph LaShelle, who would win an Oscar for his camerawork. Preminger then fought the studio in order to cast Clifton Webb in his first role since the Silent Era -- Webb was persona non grata in Hollywood for his known homosexuality -- and Preminger prevailed. The film shows no strain from all of the drama off screen. Famous for its haunting theme, its images resonate just as deeply, and this six sheet captures that beauty. Gene Tierney has never looked more beautiful than here, in stone lithography, and the elegant black background echos the film's evocative mood. Mounted on linen, the poster has maintained remarkable condition: dirt smudges appear in the title, the central fold line has cracked a bit, some writing on the back has bled through slightly near the top border, and a couple of crease marks can be found, but these seem to be the extent of the wear, as the poster shows no signs of repair. Near Mint- on Linen.
