Description

Lake Como, Italy Travel Poster (Arti Grafiche Testoni & C., Como, Italy, 1920s). Full-Bleed Poster (24.25" X 39.25").
Long before "Italy's Loveliest Lake" was inhabited by George Clooney and Madonna, wealthy Romans and aristocrats spent their leisure time along its shores. Over the centuries, the lake and its magnificent villas have maintained an allure like no other. This original stone lithography travel poster from the early twentieth century features the village of Ossuccio, with its distinctive bell tower and Isla Comacina, olive groves, and sunny slopes beckoning visitors in the background. Today, the town is known for its UNESCO Heritage Site, the Sacro Monte, a cluster of mountain chapels and sanctuaries scattered around the surrounding area. It has been a place of pilgrimage since the 1600s, and is recognized for its spiritual significance and for integrating Renaissance and alpine architecture into the natural surroundings. The artist's name appears as "l. g. Mattoni" in the upper right corner. Signs of handling include edge wear, a bottom right corner bend, tears in the top, right, and bottom border/section with archival tape on the verso. A rare find and a Heritage first! Rolled, Very Fine-.
