    Description

    La Marseillaise (R.A.C., 1937). French Grande (47" X 62.75") R. Marcos Artwork.
Jean Renoir made this retelling of the French Revolution at the tail end of the Popular Front government, a left-wing coalition of communists and socialists attempting to protect France from the suffocating influence of the Nazis. Acting as a metaphor for the country's political climate in the late 1930s, this picture focuses on the plights of not just French peasant Revolutionaries, but exiled nobles and the doomed King Louis XVI as well. Unity and acceptance overshadow the brutal violence and chaos of the actual massacre, as Renoir's humanist principals try to shine through the strife. A first time offer from Heritage, this inspiring stone litho country of origin illustration by R. Marcos has had touchup to the folds, mild vertical creases, and pinholes in the borders and interior. Some of the pinholes are unaddressed and have small rust stains. Very Fine on Linen.

    Estimate: $3,000 - $6,000.
