    Description

La Belle et la Bete (DisCina, 1946). French Grande (47" X 63").
A sumptuous feast for the eyes, this achingly beautiful country-of-origin masterpiece should be a top pick for any well curated movie poster collection. Artist Jean-Denis Malcles supplies the touch of enchantment here on the French grande for the film that was so effortlessly brought to the screen by director Jean Cocteau in 1946. At the time La Belle et la Bete (Beauty and the Beast) was filmed, Cocteau was known primarily as a poet and a painter. It's no wonder that after the film was released he instantly earned the distinction as one of the finest French directors of his era. As a further testament to the director's creative instincts, Cocteau was forced to use several different types of film stock during the making of the picture due to post-war shortages, later commenting that the differing visual textures added to the atmospheric effect. Josette Day and Jean Marais are endearing as the title characters, and La Belle et la Bete is still one of the best French films ever made. A full bleed, stone litho treasure, the piece has only had touchup to the folds. Very Fine on Linen.
