King Kong (RKO, 1933). Austrian Oversize Poster (49.5" X 111").
This is a poster one waits a lifetime just to see...let alone possess. It's the incredibly rare Austrian 9 foot, 3 inch version of the ten foot American "Upright Six Sheet." The same artwork was also used for the American three sheet Style A. The Austrian poster is virtually the same as the U.S. version with just the exception of the small airplanes in the top right of the poster being present only in the U.S. version. The colors are as bright and fresh as the day it was printed. There are few more important images on any film poster than that of what you see before you...the "Eighth Wonder of the World," atop the Empire State Building, crushing an attacking biplane in his powerful right hand, while gently protecting Fay Wray with his left. After premiering in New York City at the Radio City Music Hall in March 1932, it began doing all-time record box office business. Kong was then released internationally to an again tremendous reception, resulting in fabulous posters being produced for its promotion, including this Austrian poster and the Czech poster also being offered in this very auction. This classic fantasy tale set the standards for stop motion effects work and has inspired many of the careers of the top animation people in the motion picture business. No amount of hyperbole can ever fully describe King Kong's impact, and its revolutionary effect on how films have been made ever since. The rarity of this Austrian poster for the film also cannot be overemphasized. This is truly one of the rarest of the rare when it comes to movie posters, and definitely one of the greatest images ever created to advertise the film. The poster is full bleed and has been professionally linenbacked with light restoration. There were only single pinholes in the corners, small tears and edge wear along the bottom, and a small chip in the lower right corner. Very Fine on Linen.
