Description

James Montgomery Flagg's The Bride (Perfection Pictures, 1918). One Sheet (28" X 42").
This gorgeous stone litho one sheet from The Bride is the product of a collaboration of Thomas A. Edison and James Montgomery Flagg, two of the silent film eras most inventive and creative minds. Edison perfected the equipment necessary for making and viewing films during the first decade of the history of motion pictures. After which, the creative genius turned his attention to producing films. Flagg (1877-1960) was a talented artist and illustrator, best remembered for his political posters, including the now iconic Uncle Sam recruiting piece for the U.S. military. Flagg also wrote, starred in, and/or directed more than a dozen short films between 1914 and 1920. Included in that canon of work is The Bride which stars Peggy Hopkins, rendered splendidly by Flagg himself on this extremely rare one sheet. Hopkins made her Broadway debut in 1917 in the renowned Ziegfeld Follies, and became famous not only for her acting talents, but also her multiple marriages, worldwide romantic escapades, unbridled shopping sprees, and a collection of fur and jewels that included the famous "Portuguese Diamond." Her exceedingly flamboyant lifestyle as one of pop culture's early "It" girls even earned Hopkins a mention in the lyrics of Cole Porter and Irving Berlin. Touchup was applied to the folds, and to address three areas of missing paper in the left border that barely extend into the background, and two tiny chips in the right border. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
