Description

Invaders from Mars (RKO, 1958). First Italian Release 2 - Fogli (39.5" X 55"). Renato Fratini Artwork
The "red scare" of the 1950s inspired a "green scare" rash of science fiction movies about bug-eyed aliens from outer space coming to get us. Perhaps the finest of these is William Cameron Menzies's surreal Invaders from Mars, a purposely garish and quirky thriller that all turns out to be a young boy's fever-dream. With arch, unrealistic sets and outrageous monsters, this is an unforgettable film experience. Certainly no kid who saw the movie at the time could forget those giant green aliens with bulbous slit-eyes and velour longjohns. Expertly playing off America's fears of an imminent Communist invasion, this is still, more than four decades after its original release, a chilling picture, one that continues to have the power to curdle the blood of every viewer's inner child. The poster shows only faint bleedthrough from writing on the verso, and a very minor hole in the upper right corner. The wonderful artwork by Renato Fratini includes an image of Luce Potter, who played the Martian-Head-in-the-Glass. Potter had been one of the Munchkins in The Wizard of Oz. Very Fine+ on Linen.
