India Travel Poster (India State Railways, 1930s). Full-Bleed Poster (25" X 39.75") "Visit India."
Greek born William Spencer Bagdatopoulus (1884-1965) spent his childhood in the Netherlands, where he began studying art. His teenage years were devoted to traveling, studying, and painting, eventually leading him to London where he was elected a member of the Royal Society of Arts in 1909. After serving with the British Army during World War I, Bagdatopoulos was commissioned by The Times of India Press to tour the country on its behalf. From 1924-26 he traveled to every part of India, painting images of important cultural sights. His art was featured in the Times of India annuals, as well as in advertisements for the magazine and travel posters for the Indian Railways Promotion Bureau. This original poster is Bagdatopoulos' exquisite depiction of the The Mahabodhi Temple in Budhgaya, a Buddhist temple marking the location where Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, is said to have attained enlightenment. The artist's work is often misattributed, as his signature is readily, but erroneously interpreted as "W.S. Bylityllis." A fine rendering of one of India's most revered spiritual destinations, the poster details the intricate facade of the temple, accentuated by the vibrant colors of the textiles adorning visitors and lavish caparisons of the temple's processional elephants. A rare find, the piece has minimal wear for its age: light horizontal creases, and small tears or tiny nicks along the borders with archival tissue tape on the verso. Rolled, Very Fine-.
