Werewolf of London (Universal, 1935). Fine/Very Fine. Title Lobby Card (11" X 14").
Still leading the way on the forefront of horror movies, Universal had already explored some of the most fearsome creatures of myth and literature with Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, and The Invisible Man. Now it was time to tackle the daunting prospect of filming a shapeshifter. Henry Hull was the unfortunate victim of the bite of another werewolf (Warner Oland) and once again, the job of creating one of Universal's beasts fell to makeup artist, Jack Pierce. Later used in 1941's The Wolf Man, Pierce's first makeup was considered too much of a total transformation, so it was altered to reveal more of Hull's actual appearance - and the rest is history. The film remains a fan favorite and the first werewolf story in a feature film. Extremely scarce, this vibrant title card had some signs of use which have been brilliantly restored. There was slight edge wear, corner bends, pinholes, and a tear from the left border into the moon at the left edge of the card. Other peripheral issues included a small corner chip, a bit of ink writing in the upper left corner, and mild edge toning. The interior, however, was mainly unaffected and shows off its bright colors well. It is well known throughout collecting that the title cards from the early 1930s Universal films are among the best designed and this example certainly falls into that category.
