    Description

The Plague in Florence (Decla, 1919). German (37.25" X 28.5") Josef Fenneker Artwork.
Written by Fritz Lang, this is only his seventh screenwriter credit. It is based loosely on the "Masque of Red Death" by Edgar Allen Poe, the horror film plot revolves around a femme fatale or rich courtesan that arrives in and drives the city ruler and his son mad with her beauty. The church forms a mob to destroy the woman but the son kills his father to save her and leads the city into dens of sexual debauchery. The arrival of a ragged female figure who personifies the Plague, begins her infection of the entire city. This fabulous poster is by artist Josef Fenneker (1895-1956), whose work had a cutting edge, contemporary style. With their elements of Expressionism (the distorted figures rendered in jagged, sweeping contours against shadowy backgrounds), their severe elements of Art Nouveau or Jugendstil, as it was called in Germany, these posters represent an outstanding body of graphic design and a documentary record of German cinema at its most innovative and influential. Most importantly, this wealth of styles turns the works into impressive documents that have also long been used as illustrations and atmospheric depictions of the Weimar Republic. Fenneker was commissioned primarily by Berlin's Marmorhaus cinema, which was located on Kurf├╝rstendamm and known for its first releases, for which he produced many examples. The poster has been archivally conserved on an acid free paper. There is almost no retouch to this totally intact poster which at one point had a center vertical fold. Very Fine+ on Paper.
