Description
The Mummy's Hand (Universal, 1940). Fine+ on Kraft Paper. Six Sheet (77.25" X 79.25").The crown jewel of the Larry K. Springer collection, this is an original six sheet for the second film in the Universal Mummy saga. In over twenty years of poster auctions at Heritage and in the decades preceding, we have never encountered or heard of another example, making this among the rarest Universal horror pieces ever produced. An unofficial sequel to The Mummy, this film introduced audiences to Kharis (played by Tom Tyler), a new mummy distinct from Boris Karloff's Imhotep. The plot follows archaeologist Steve Banning and his team as they uncover the tomb of Princess Ananka, awakening the cursed Kharis, who is under the control of a secret cult. Blending action, mystery, and mild comedy, the film laid the groundwork for Universal's later Mummy sequels. Somewhat unusually, the poster was backed to Kraft paper by the exchange at the time of it's original issue - there is an Independent Exchange, Philadelphia stamp on the paper verso. It is unrestored, then, in the conventional sense, as this was done to increase durability when the poster was new and in original usage. There are some visible tears, surface marring, scattered small holes in the image, a paper lift at right above the title, enlarged pinhole clusters, light tide lines in the title treatment, soiling in the borders, and spot staining in Dick Foran's face. There is a split at the upper right border edge and longer splits along the upper fold junctions. None of this really detracts from the majesty of the piece, and it could readily be removed and linen backed to adjust these issues. Like the mummy Kharis, it may be millennia before this piece once again emerges. This is your opportunity to add a monumental treasure to your collection. From the Larry K. Springer Collection.
