Description

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (RKO, 1939). French Double Grande (62" X 92").
Breathtaking in its grandeur, this French double grande far surpasses the beauty of other poster formats for RKO's 1939 adaptation of Victor Hugo's classic novel. The gnarled, tortured soul Quasimodo (Charles Laughton) crouches forlornly over his beloved gypsy dancer (Maureen O'Hara in her first American film appearance). Artist Roland Coudon employed a limited color palette of red and blue, with a visually arresting effect. A shaft of light pierces the stained glass windows of the 15th century Notre Dame cathedral, softly illuminating a beatific O'Hara. Coudon is also credited with the phenomenal French grande style A for King Kong (1933). Laughton was one of the most brilliant actors of his era, and this part proved to be a challenge for the gifted thespian. His sensitive portrayal of the deformed bell-ringer began each day with a 2 1/2 hour makeup session, but surprisingly, Laughton was somehow overlooked by the Academy that year. For a poster of its scale and age, this piece is in miraculous condition. Only touchup to the folds can be detected, and the linen has been trimmed to edge. Any collector would be fortunate to have this supremely rare, awe-inspiring poster on display. Very Fine on Linen.
