Description

The Curse of Frankenstein (Warner Bros., 1957). Fine+ on Linen. British Quad (30" X 40").
At long last, the country of origin quad for the first Hammer Horror film makes its debut appearance at Heritage Auctions. This poster is so scarce that not a single example has menaced the block at a major American auction since the advent of the internet. The Curse of Frankenstein marked a sharp break from Universal's earlier horror cycle by infusing gothic horror with bold color, graphic violence, and a more sensual atmosphere. Unlike Universal's iconic monsters, this Frankenstein emphasized human cruelty, moral corruption, and visceral gore, making the horror more physical and immediate. This film launched the fledgling Hammer style with its lavish Technicolor, shocking visuals, and classical acting gravitas thanks to talent like Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, effectively redefining the genre for a postwar audience. Backed to linen, the poster had paper replacement to the outermost 0.25" of the blank border. Touchup was applied to fold wear and misfolds, separation and stray chips, pinholes, tears in the leftmost image, and small chips in the billing block near Cushing's credit. The borders have been airbrushed. Overall, the piece presents beautifully with vivid colors and arresting imagery. The poster that introduced the public to Hammer Horror would be an important addition to any advanced collection. It's been more than a generation since a copy has arisen. If you miss this opportunity, not even a lab full of gadgetry can revive it.
