Description

The Bride of Frankenstein (Universal, 1935). Folded, Fine/Very Fine. Half Sheet (22" X 28") Style A.
The absolute pinnacle of Universal's Golden Age horror output, this is an original Style A half sheet for James Whale's The Bride of Frankenstein. Hewing closer to the plot of the original Mary Shelley novel, Boris Karloff reprises his career-defining role as the Monster, this time with more developed speech abilities. The film has been lauded for its sophisticated subtext, introducing issues of sexuality and sacrilege to the cautionary tale of hubris and scientism run amok in the original. Moreso than Frankenstein, this film incorporates comedic and thought provoking elements in the trappings of horror to slide past the censors for an overall richer and more accomplished work of art. Originally unearthed in the Wellington, New Zealand half sheet find, this is one of only two copies of the Style A known to the hobby. There is a scuff in the monsters forehead, a few scuffs around the billing block, corner pinholes, faint marginal spots and dust shadows, and a minor split at the bottom central vertical fold. Sensitive expert restoration has enhanced the reds in the image and titles. The poster presents beautifully, and is undoubtedly one of the greatest horror promotional images ever released. This would be among the highlights of any advanced private or institutional archive. Property from a Distinguished Collection.
