Phantom of the Opera (Universal, 1943). Fine- on Paper. Insert (14" X 36").
This sumptuous color remake of the Gaston Leroux story was the first to follow Lon Chaney's unforgettable version. Claude Rains plays the infamous Opera Ghost, with Nelson Eddy and Susanna Foster rounding out the love triangle. The insert format for this film does not come up for auction often, and this example has been restored to address edge and fold wear, pinholes, and chips in the top right corner. Also repaired was a complete diagonal tear at the bottom through Claude Rains' credit. The upper background has been touched up, and the borders have been airbrushed. The insert has been folded post-restoration with a crack at the center horizontal fold, and it still shows some mild color fading. Fine- on Paper.
