    Description

Murders in the Rue Morgue (Universal, 1932). Very Fine. Window Card (14" X 22") Karoly Grosz Artwork.
This film is one of the formative classics in the great 1930s Golden Age of mad scientist films. It was the second such film ever made, following the massive success of Frankenstein (1931). It has close connection to that film in that it was directed by Robert Florey, who had originally been signed as the director of the Mary Shelley story before being replaced by James Whale. Florey has also brought with him Bela Lugosi, who was originally pegged to play his Frankenstein monster. Posters for this film are exceedingly scarce and this wonderful window card has art by Karoly Grosz, whose signature is featured on the window card and not on the the similar one sheet which he also designed. This gorgeous card is an original with obvious dot pattern printing. There were several forgeries of this card done in recent years which we have seen and know this to not be one of the fakes. Professional conservation has airbrushed the card's borders, imprint area, and verso. There are slight creases that were not addressed, and a snipe has been attached to the imprint area with adhesive after the airbrushing. There is a minor post-restoration nick in the lower border, as well as a small tear that has been braced with archival tape on the verso. This card is one of only a small handful known to exist.
