Description
King Kong (RKO, R-1938). Very Fine- on Linen. One Sheet (27.25" X 41").Rescued from the basement of a New York City Brownstone comes this fresh to market reissue one sheet, never previously offered for public sale. Considered by most as one of the greatest horror/science fiction/fantasy films ever made, King Kong was certainly one of the most innovative, with stop motion animation created by the great Willis O'Brien, it set the standard that eventually led to the high tech CGI animation of today and influenced dozens of filmmakers, including the legendary Ray Harryhausen. Starring Fay Wray as Ann Darrow, Robert Armstrong as Carl Denham, and Bruce Cabot as Jack Driscoll, the non-stop action, set on a remote jungle island and among the skyscrapers of New York City thrilled audiences upon its initial release in 1933, and still continues to entertain today. This amazing image, in the original 1938 format in which it was printed, is sure to thrill! This stunning reissue one sheet is more rare than the original release one sheets for this classic thriller, but thanks to Portal Publications, a printing operation out of Sausalito, California, that was actively reproducing classic movie poster images on a smaller format for poster shops and mail order trade is possibly the most famous of the paper for this great film. No doubt unable to get their hands on an original Kong poster, they reproduced this beautiful piece. The fabulous artwork surely rivals the best of the 1933 Kong campaign and in our opinion is one of the very best posters created for this seminal film. Backed to linen, restoration has addressed wear, splits and small chips to the folds and within the borders. There was a 5-inch tear approximately one-inch from the left border and below the center horizontal fold as well as a small tear at top. The borders have been airbrushed. These issues were handled by a talented artist and the poster presents beautifully. Only one of three copies we are aware of, this rarity will get lots of attention and will wow any collector whose successful bid brings this home. A rare find for the discriminating collector! From the Robert and Carla Schenk Collection.
