King Kong (RKO, 1933). Very Fine+ on Linen. Three Sheet (41" X 80.5") Style B.
The original King of Monsters looms large on this impressive three sheet, a prize that Heritage has had the opportunity to offer only once before! A film of profound importance in the annals of moviemaking, RKO knew they had a major hit on their hands when Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack turned in this legendary fantasy full of dinosaurs and adventure. Not only did they create a tragic version of the "Beauty and the Beast" narrative that has continued to captivate audiences for generations, but they did so by combining numerous technical innovations to awe-inspiring affect. Chief among these was the work of stop-motion animator Willis O'Brien, whose efforts on such projects as The Lost World brought him to the attention of Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack. It was truly O'Brien's skilled treatment of Kong and Skull Island's dinosaurs that breathed life into the film, keeping audiences' suspension of disbelief in check and thus raising the status of the picture to a true classic. To match such a victory of filmmaking, the poster offered here is just as much a visual triumph and is one of the rarest three sheets in the hobby. Its wonderfully vibrant stone litho illustration of Kong rampaging about New York City is iconic, and the poster's three panels have been very well aligned with no "image correction" needed to mask improper overlapping of the registration. Moreover, the three sheet was in great shape even prior to backing and touchup. It has had only light partial touchup to the folds, pinholes, and small tears. There is a minor unaddressed stain in the upper border, but the image itself is very clean and colorful, a perfect item for any collector's wish list from one of the most important films ever made.
