    Description

King Kong (RKO, 1933). Very Fine+ on Linen. French Four Panel (92.5" X 124") C. Finel Artwork.
Posters for King Kong, one of cinema's finest triumphs, always create quite a stir at auction, especially those that rarely surface, like this mind-blowing large French four panel. A collector's dream, this spectacular French four panel poster makes its return to Heritage for only the second time in nearly ten years. True to his larger-than-life persona, Merian C. Cooper -- war hero, explorer, and cinematic pioneer -- conceived and delivered an imposing, captivating, and unforgettable creature. King Kong, his "The Eighth Wonder of the World," is also larger-than-life on this poster, and that's the way he should be. Inestimable is the impact of this picture and its trailblazing effect on how films have been produced ever since. After premiering in New York City at the Radio City Music Hall in March 1933, it began doing record box office business. Kong was then released internationally to another tremendous reception, resulting in an incredible assemblage of posters produced for its promotion, including this large-format French piece. Artist C. Finel of the GB Hess workshop perfectly conjured the mighty beast mid-rage -- mouth gaping, incisors gleaming, savage-eyed -- with a distressed but sylph-like Fay Wray enveloped in his meaty clutch. Printed 88 years ago, this poster is in phenomenal condition and needed minimal restoration. It has been expertly restored on linen and shows touchups to the folds, a few minute chips within the image area, and a minor crease in the bottom border below the Kong title image. The linen has been trimmed to the borders.
