Description

King Kong (RKO, 1933). Fine on Linen. Czech Poster (37" X 49.5").
Few movie posters are as iconic as the Style B one sheet of 1933's King Kong, which depicts the titular beast, Fay Wray in hand, towering above a crowd of panicked onlookers as flames rise from the skyline behind him. It is a poster as impressive and dramatic as the film itself, and one which hardly ever makes itself available to collectors. What is being offered here is something even rarer and more impressive: an original-release Czech poster, with the same exact stone lithographed image, only larger than the American poster (37" X 49.5" versus 27" X 41"). Kong was, and remains, a groundbreaking tour de force of stop-motion animation that made audiences around the world believe King Kong had truly kidnapped Fay Wray, battled dinosaurs to the death, rampaged through New York City, and scaled the Empire State Building. That final scene-Kong perched atop the skyscraper, swatting at attacking biplanes-has been etched into cinematic history, remaining one of the most iconic moments ever captured on screen. Now, one collector has a rare opportunity to own an iconic piece of the monster's legacy. This poster had tears, fold wear, small areas of paper loss (most noticeably at the right edge), all of which were addressed by a masterful restoration. The resulting poster is nothing short of breathtaking. From the Richard C. Allen Collection.
