    Description

Freaks (Excelsior, R-1949). Near Mint/Mint. Lobby Card Set of 8 (11" X 14") with Original Studio Envelope.
Gaining an infamous reputation the instant it was released, Tod Browning's 1932 pre-Code film, Freaks, used real sideshow performers in the cast, an extremely controversial choice that led to the film being banned in the UK for its overt exploitation. Already subjected to numerous cuts from the studio, the picture received only a limited stateside release, and was pulled from distribution in no short order when audiences expressed horror and outrage at its content. The film remained locked away for some 17 years before Excelsior and Dwain Esper picked it up for distribution, turning the commercial failure into a cult classic. It's not often we see a complete lobby set for this film up for auction, and certainly not with cards in as fantastic condition as these. Accompanied by an original studio envelope, this fantastic set shows practically no signs of wear aside from the most minute corner bumps, an incredible state given its almost seventy years of age.
