The Woman Alone (Gaumont-20th Century Fox, 1937). Fine on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41") AKA: Sabotage.
Filmed in London, this Alfred Hitchcock thriller takes its plot from Joseph Conrad's espionage novel The Secret Agent. However, the director had just recently released another film with that same title, prompting the studio to distribute the picture as Sabotage in its native Great Britain and as The Woman Alone in America. Sylvia Sidney, in her only Hitchcock film, stars as Mrs. Verloc, a wife who begins to suspect her husband (Oskar Homolka) of being the mastermind behind recent bombings in the city. Alfred Hitchcock would return to the theme of spies and saboteurs numerous times in his career, and this masterful film was one of his best efforts. Paper of any sort from the picture is incredibly scarce, and this poster has not made an appearance at Heritage in almost ten years! The film's one sheets were known to have snipes pasted over the title, which caused wear to that area when lifted. Now beautifully restored, the poster no longer shows evidence of this, with repairs made to small chips in the title, one to the right of the "E" of "Alone," and another in the background to the left of the title. Other issues have been corrected as well, such as fold wear, a tear from the lower border into Sylvia Sydney's hair, a small chip in the left border, and potential bleedthrough from writing in the upper corners. Fine on Linen.
