Description

The 39 Steps (Gaumont, 1935). Very Fine on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41").
Among Alfred Hitchcock's greatest masterpieces, The 39 Steps also had some of the best posters created for the director's films, evidenced by this gorgeous stone-litho one sheet. Hitchcock had somewhat of a love affair with espionage, as the topic was a frequent subject of his films throughout his career. In this picture, Hitchcock delivers one of his most suspenseful rides, as Robert Donat is forced into tracking down and exposing a ring of saboteurs. Other themes seen in the film that would make frequent reappearances in the director's works include an innocent man being framed or the victim of mistaken identity, the use of a "MacGuffin" plot device, and Madeleine Carole's character as the quintessential "Hitchcock blonde." Still projecting a tense atmosphere despite being full of vibrant color, this one sheet has had skilled restoration to correct slight fold wear and some separation, pinholes, small tears, and a minor chip in Robert Donat's nose at the upper crossfold. The borders have had some retouch work, making the poster a prime display piece worthy of any vintage poster fan. Property from a Distinguished Collection.
