    Description

    Cleopatra (Paramount, 1934). Jumbo Window Card (22" X 28").
The Hays Code was initiated in 1930 but had little enforcement. By 1934 there was stiffer policing and for films released after July first, a "Certificate of Approval" was required. But Cecil B. DeMille would release Cleopatra on October 5th of 1934, replete with a naked woman in the opening titles, and scantily clad sexually suggestive nymphs running amuck in nearly every scene. This wonderful jumbo window card successfully hints at what the film delivered. Claudette Colbert was never lovelier...or naughtier...than as the seductive Queen. The artist's rendering of her sloe-eyed temptress in her magnificent Travis Banton-designed headdress is still one of the most recognizable images in Hollywood film history. This seldom found oversize window card has had expert restoration to replace the top imprint area. There was a long vertical tear, a small tear in the lower left edge, and small tack holes in the borders. There were two tears in Colbert's face, and one in the credits. The result of the first class restoration is a truly desirable example of the Golden Age of Hollywood posters that would improve any collection. Very Good- on Cardstock.
