Hell's Angels (United Artists, 1930). Lobby Card (11" X 14"). Howard Hughes spent almost four million recreating the spectacular aerial battles of World War I, so even doing decent business at the box office, the film could not make a profit in its first run. Hughes spared no expense on all aspects of the production: for every foot used in the final cut, Hughes shot 249 feet of film; he reshot much of the film for the conversion to sound; and he had all of the prints tinted and hand-colored before releasing them for general distribution. This lobby card features Jean Harlow's beautiful profile, a prized rarity for this film, since an eight-minute two-strip Technicolor sequence remains the only surviving color footage of her. Like Oscar-winner "Wings," the starlet sits at the center of a love triangle between two aviator brothers, a sibling rivalry pilfered by the decidedly non-Oscar-winner, "Pearl Harbor." Harlow glows in the card, with only light abrasions touching her image. The borders have a few pinholes and small stains, and the upper-left corner has a crease mark. The card otherwise looks clean, a condition that Hughes would have appreciated. Very Fine-.
