DescriptionHallelujah! (MGM, 1929). Full-Bleed Window Card (14" X 22") Al Hirschfeld Artwork.
The story of a troubled sharecropper (Daniel L. Haynes) and his relationship with a seductive young woman (Nina Mae McKinney), Hallelujah! was one of the first all-black films produced by a major studio. The filming and release of the picture was not without travails, incurring resistance from both sides of the Mason-Dixon line. Big theaters were concerned about the crowd the film would draw, and it wasn't until independent exhibitors screened the picture, attracting mixed audiences, that the larger players got on board. It was also early in the talkie era, and Vidor deftly took on the challenge of filming the necessary outdoor scenes silently, and then dubbing in sound, a synchronization process he found "maddening." Any paper from this historic picture is a rare find, with this being the first window card Heritage has ever offered for the film. Boasting an early piece of Al Hirschfeld artwork, this window card displays signs of use like edge wear with small nicks, a few chips in the right border, and tears into the interior. There is staining, smudging, and a horizontal bend below the title. Some of these issues have cellophane and archival tape on the verso, and the card displays some brittleness. Very Good/Fine.
Estimate: $1,500 - $3,000.
