DescriptionHallelujah! (MGM, 1929). CGC Graded Title Lobby Card (11" X 14").
The story of a troubled sharecropper (Daniel L. Haynes) and his relationship with a seductive young woman (Nina Mae McKinney), Hallelujah! was one of the first all-black films produced by a major studio. Uncertain of the venture, MGM considered this picture such an immense risk that it asked director King Vidor to forego his salary. Despite this, Vidor's determination to depict a non-stereotypical view of African-American life paid off, earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director. An early feature in the talkie era, Vidor deftly took on the challenge of filming the necessary outdoor scenes silently, and then dubbing in sound, a synchronization process he found "maddening." Paper from this landmark picture is almost never seen at auction, and this lovely title card has a grade of 8.5, Very Fine+.
Estimate: $2,000 - $4,000.
