Gone with the Wind (MGM, 1939). Original Walter Plunkett/ Scarlett O'Hara Costume Sketch (18" X 23").
Among the over 300 costume designs that Walter Plunkett personally created for Gone With the Wind was this stunning image of Scarlett O'Hara. There is an approval stamp on the verso of the artist's board from Selznick International Pictures Inc. that was to bear the name of the character and the scene the costume was supposed to be used in, however, this information was never noted. The drawing depicts Scarlett siting in a wheelchair and one would assume this may have been a proposed costume for the scene after her fall down the stairs when married to Rhett. The only scene in which she is seen in recuperation is the one in which she and Rhett discuss leaving Atlanta and are interrupted by their daughter who soon falls to her death. Perhaps this was an alternate for that scene. We can only imagine Vivien Leigh in this finished costume and mourn it's lack in the finished film. The original signature by Walter Plunkett in the lower right corner in watercolor was done lightly in a more translucent color. However the rest of the image is so bold and colorful so we assume that Plunkett just signed the piece in the faint watercolor that he was using. The board has a slight water stain in the lower edge and there are signs of toning along the other edges. Original costume designs from Gone With the Wind are almost impossible to come by as they've either been in collections since the film's release or in museums and archives. Heritage has been fortunate to offer four other original designs since 2006. This particular example came from the heir of a secretary who worked for Ernest L. Canon. Mr. Canon was the chief financial officer at Selznick International Pictures. These examples, signed by the credited costume designer, are outstanding examples of Hollywood history and are assuredly desired by not only costume collectors but by collectors of one the most famous films ever made. Fine/Very Fine.
