Description

Gone with the Wind (MGM, 1938). Original Walter Plunkett/ Mrs. Merriwether Costume Sketch(18" X 21.75").
One of the more comedic moments of Gone With the Wind occurs when Dr. Meade tells the gentlemen of Atlanta that if they wish to dance with the lady of their choice, they must bid for her -- as the funds will support the southern cause. There are three ladies of society who discuss the morality of this decree and among them was Mrs. Merriwether. Offered in this lot is an original costume sketch of Jane Darwell as Mrs. Merriwether. The name plate of the character is still firmly attached at the bottom of the image. Walter Plunkett personally designed this costume (one of his 377 designs) and boldly signed this piece in green watercolor in the lower right. On the verso, is a purple ink stamp from Selznick International Pictures, Inc. and has the following information; For: Mrs. Merriwether, Picture No. 28-9 Change No. #2. The costume was approved by the films director, George Cukor who has signed in pencil in the appropriate space. And although the Best Director Oscar went to Victor Fleming for Gone With the Wind, the film's original director (and during all pre-production) was George Cukor until he was replaced. We believe the costume does not appear in the final film as most likely cut from the final edit of the film. This original costume design is in exceptional condition, with a very faint water tide line showing in the lower right edge. The piece also shows a very slight bit of toning from having been in a frame. It was acquired by an heir to a secretary working for Mr. Ernest L. Scanlon. Mr. Scanlon was the chief financial officer at Selznick International Pictures and after the film's completion he gave a few of Mr. Plunkett's designs to his employee. Examples such as this lot signed by the credited costume designer are outstanding examples of Hollywood history and are assuredly desired by not only costume collectors but by collectors and fans of one the most famous films ever made. Very Fine.
