Gate of Hell (Daiei, 1953). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. Japanese STB (20.25" X 58").
This historical drama would put Japanese cinema on the world stage, due in no short part to the beautiful cinematography from director Teinosuke Kinugasa. Shot with great skill in gorgeous Eastman color, the picture was the first Japanese color film to gain an international release, earning first place at the Cannes film festival and an honorary Academy Award. Making a first time appearance at Heritage, this lovely Japanese STB reflects the vast array of colors found in the film with its vivid images of stars Machiko Kyo and Kazuo Hasegawa. Professional restoration has corrected edge and fold wear, slight fold separations, pinholes, and small chips at the edges. There were moderate tears in the outer background, as well as a tear from the upper vertical fold into Machijo Kyô's forehead. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.

    Estimate: $1,200 - $2,400.
