    Description

Victory or Death (Itala Film, 1913). Italian Four Panel (81" X 112") Airplane Style, Leopoldo Metlicovitz Artwork.
An early crime thriller, the plot revolves around the Countess Alberti -- played by Berta Nelson -- who spends the film in hot pursuit of a spy who stole her father's secret documents. Reaching the shoreline to discover that the thief has already set sail, she commanders an airplane from which she jumps to board the ship and rescue the secret files. The most amazing aspect of this magnificent poster is the artist Leopoldo Metlicovitz (1868-1944), a famous Italian designer who was a painter, cartellonista, illustrator and theatrical stage designer. Together with his fellow Marcello Dudovich, Metlicovitz is considered one of the fathers of Italian advertising graphics. This thrilling film had three other styles of this large format paper, with this particular poster void of any text as was most likely be used internationally. Touchup has addressed the folds, a few pinholes in the image, and some tears. The poster has unaddressed staining and smudging, border pinholes and tears, background ink stamp bleedthrough, and toning. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
