Description

The Seven Samurai (Toho, 1954). Very Fine on Linen. Japanese B3 (18" X 24.75"). Chihōban Style.
Scarcer than the Honsha-ban (Head Office Issue) B2 for the film, this Chihōban (Regional Style) has only appeared at US auction a handful of times in the last 20 years. Directed by master auteur Akira Kurosawa, Seven Samurai is a landmark Japanese epic that follows a poor village threatened by bandits, which hires seven masterless samurai to defend it. The film combines intense action, rich character development, and innovative cinematography to depict the samurai's strategic planning, bravery, and sacrifice. Widely acclaimed for its narrative structure, pacing, and humanistic themes, the film has profoundly influenced global cinema, inspiring countless remakes and adaptations, including The Magnificent Seven. It is celebrated not only as a masterpiece of Japanese film but also as one of the greatest movies ever made worldwide. Rolled and never folded prior to linen backing, there was only touchup to a long pinhole at top center. Otherwise unrestored, the poster exhibits light toning to the extreme outer edges and presents beautifully. Country-of-origin material for this seminal classic is extremely sought-after, and no advanced collection is complete without coverage.
