Description

Napoleon (Gaumont, 1927). Folded, Fine-. Original Release French Poster (122" X 91") Georges Scott Artwork.
Napoleon, directed by Abel Gance, is a groundbreaking silent epic that revolutionized cinema with its innovative use of handheld cameras, rapid editing, and its famous Polyvision-a widescreen technique using three simultaneous projectors. The film was heavily edited and fragmented over the years, but British film historian Kevin Brownlow dedicated decades to restoring it, assembling the most complete version possible. In 1981, a fully restored cut premiered at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, presented by Francis Ford Coppola with a score conducted by his father, Carmine Coppola. This triumphant restoration reintroduced audiences to Gance's visionary masterpiece, solidifying its place as one of the most ambitious and influential films of the silent era. This original-release French poster, a first-time offering from Heritage Auctions, beautifully captures the creation of La Marseillaise by noted artist Georges Scott. A monumental poster that befits an equally monumental film, this poster shows toning, fold wear, and some paper loss. From the Dominique Besson Collection.
