    Description

Mädchen in Uniform (Exclusivas Huet, Early, 1930s). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. Spanish One Sheet (28" X 39.5").
Made at a time when the Weimar Republic was transitioning to the fascism of Nazi Germany, this landmark film is a searing examination of a young teenage girl's sexual awakening in the world of an authoritarian all-girl's boarding school. Manuela (Hertha Thiele), the 14-year-old daughter of a Prussian soldier, is sent to the school when her mother dies. The harsh realities of her new life are eased somewhat by the realization that her growing feelings for her kind teacher, Fraulein von Bernburg (Dorothea Wieck), are mutual. Of course, Nazi Germany tried, unsuccessfully, to burn every copy of the film dealing with lesbianism. It was also banned in the U.S., until Eleanor Roosevelt recognized the value of its complex themes and spoke out in the film's favor. Offered for the first time at Heritage is this vibrant Spanish poster with lovely stylized artwork of the two illicit lovers. Backed but not restored, the poster has edge and fold wear, pinpoint crossfold separations, and thin creases. There are also some minor chips and tears, as well as unobtrusive stains and smudges.
