    Description

    La Strada (DeLaurentiis, R-Late 1950s). Italian 4 - Foglio (55" X 78").
Conjuring imagery from his own circus background, filmmaker Federico Fellini created his much lauded La Strada in 1954. A rag-tag traveling carnival features Anthony Quinn as the loutish strongman Zampano, whose temper is readily unleashed on Giulietta Masina, his meek girlfriend. Richard Basehart stars as the clown/aerialist who would like to save her from a life of ill treatment, but she refuses to run away with him. The film was originally released in Italy in 1954, and in the U.S. in 1956. This country-of-origin poster is an Italian 4-foglio from a later release. It notes that the film won the first Academy Award for Best Foreign-Language Film, awarded in 1956 (the poster reads 1957). Artist Enrico De Seta's images of Basehart strolling the highwire, Quinn bursting forth in a rage, and a doleful-looking Masina in the foreground are simply beautiful. Touchup has been applied to torn pinholes in the borders, the left background, and folds with small tears and chips. Exceedingly rare, this large format poster will be a jewel in any collection. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
