    La Grande Illusion (R.A.C., 1937). French Double Grande (62.75" X 93") N. Brodsky Artwork.
Almost eighty years after it was made, La Grande Illusion remains one of cinema's great achievements. Starring Erich von Stroheim, Jean Gabin, Marcel Dalio, and Pierre Fresnay, director Jean Renoir focuses on the human relationships that evolved during World War I. He especially hones in on the universality of humankind, regardless of nationality, religion, or social class. Ironically enough, Renoir's message of unity was so powerful that both the Nazis and the French themselves banned the picture. Believing the film to be anti-German, the Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels listed La Grande Illusion as "Cinematic Public Enemy No. 1" and ordered the confiscation and destruction of all its prints. The French, for their part, banned all showings until the end of the war, fearing that Renoir's potent ideology would discourage the French troops from fighting at all. Bearing beautifully stylized artwork by Brodsky, this country of origin poster is display ready after touchup to the folds, pinholes in the background, a mild tear in the upper border, and a couple of small crossfold chips. There is a staple hole in the upper left corner that has not been addressed. Very Fine+ on Linen.
