This World War I drama, considered one of the greatest war films ever produced, was directed and co-written by the legendary Jean Renoir, who himself was a veteran of the Great War and strove to provide a critical yet humanistic view of war. The film's title cleverly comes from a massively popular 1909 book of the same name by Norman Angell, who held that war, especially in modern Europe, would be preposterous and uncivilized, and avoided aligning the idea of war with any notion of logic or rationality. Aptly, The Grand Illusion does not depict any actual combat and chooses instead to focus on the deleterious effects the global conflict had on relationships between people of different and similar backgrounds. Heritage offers for the first time this French double grande review style poster featuring commentary by famous French publications of the era. Although the poster has been backed on linen, the it had minimal wear prior to restoration. Still visible is toning within the folds.
