    Description

    Gate of Hell (Daiei, 1953). Folded, Very Fine/Near Mint. Japanese B2 (20.5" X 28.5").
Originally released as Jigokumen, this Japanese drama tells the story of a samurai (Kazuo Hasegawa) whose loyalty to his master is rewarded by the granting of his any desire. Unfortunately, he desires Lady Kesa (Machiko Kyo), the happily married wife of an imperial guardsman (Isao Yamagata). Filmed shortly after the end of U.S. occupation in Japan, it was the first Japanese film to gain true artistic acclaim in the States. Using Eastmancolor film, Gate of Hell was both Daiei's first color film and the first Japanese color film to be released outside of Japan. It won the 1954 Palme d'Or (then known as the Grand Prix) at the Cannes Film Festival, a 1955 Academy Honorary Award for Best Foreign Language Film, an Academy Award for best costume design, and the 1954 New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Only light edge wear on this otherwise perfect poster.
