Gate of Hell (Daiei, 1953). Folded, Very Fine-. Japanese B1 (28.5" X 40.25").
An artistic achievement with both stunning visuals and masterful storytelling, director Teinosuke Kinugasa brought Kan Kikuchi's tragic play to the big screen with much critical acclaim. Kinugasa wowed not only Japanese audiences with his skilled use of Eastman Film's color technology, but also the rest of the world, as Japan's first full color film with an international release. A tale of war, jealousy, and deadly obsession, the picture follows samurai Morito Endo (well played by Kazuo Hasegawa) and his struggle to acclimate to peaceful society after the Heiji Rebellion of 1160. Machiko Kyo, known for her performances in other period dramas like Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon, brilliantly plays the loyal and happily married object of Endo's affections, with Isao Yamagata acting as Kyo's husband. The film won the Grand Prix (now known as the Palme d'Or) at the Cannes Film Festival, an honorary Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, and an Academy Award for Best Costume Design. Never before offered at Heritage, this country of origin poster displays such signs of handling as slight edge and fold wear, minute crossfold separations, pinholes in the corners, and soft creases. There are some small paper lifts and tape stains at the edges. Folded, Very Fine-.
